The Fountain is the song that started it all for Foust. It was the first single we released in an effort to gauge the response of our brand of rock n roll with the public. This song was released as an A/B single along with the Pop-rock song ‘Please’, and the response was so tremendous that we decided to carry on and release our debut EP Revival, just a few short months later. Within three weeks the song has seen additions and spins on over 40 terrestrial and internet radio stations and shows. We’re very proud of The Fountain, so here’s a little back story about the writing and recording process.
Writing The Fountain
It’s easy to tell right off the bat where are influences lay on this one. Much like The Ocean, our current single, this song is in drop-d tuning. The riff originated out of listening to heavy doses of Slash’s Snakepit and Core from Stone Temple Pilots. The song’s dirty guitar tones were heavily inspired by both of those groups. The song and lyrics come from a very personal place, and if you couldn’t guess by now…the song is a play on the fountain of youth.

The Lyrics of The Fountain
The fountain of youth is the basic premise of the lyrical content, and the idea was embedded in my mind after watching the incredible 2007 Darren Aronofsky film, The Fountain. The movie tells four different journeys all to the same end. I wanted to write a song that anyone on their journey could relate with. For me, that journey was navigating the internal and external feelings about being “too old”. I was told that I was too old to being play rock music, too old for this, or too old for that. I refused to listen, regardless the consequences.
Here’s the trailer to The Fountain:
The lyrics discuss how the voices, both on the inside and on the outside, can have a devastating impact if you let them, but you have to find your own path. In the song, the path is described as the River. That river will lead you to your personal fountain of youth. In my case, that fountain is rock n roll.
Here are the actual lyrics:
Verse 1
These voices on the inside
They’ve got a delicate thirst
These voices on the outside
Won’t bother if you’re not first.
Somebody take me to the river
And then we’ll follow it down.
My body led me to the fountain
And in this water we’ll drown.
Verse 2
These demons on the inside,
Well they’ve been hanging around.
They’re not the type to wander,
They stick to the lost and found.
Somebody take me to the river
And then we’ll follow it down.
My body led me to the fountain
And in this water we’ll drown.
Chorus
I’m Ready to go, Ready to go , Ready to go
BeCause I’m drinking from the fountain
Im Ready to go, Ready to go , Ready to go
BeCause Im drinking from the fountain some more
Inspiration for the Fountain
We wear our influences on our sleeves, and take input from everywhere and everything. That’s clearly evident with the entire song being spurred on by the movie, The Fountain. From a music perspective we’ve taken influences from a myriad of places: Foo Fighters, Slash’s Snakepit, Motley Crue, and more
